Since his work in 1888-1889, the sunflower became synonymous with Vincent Van Gogh. The beauty, emotive quality, and creativity of his painted flowers are timeless, leaving room for every viewer to find their own, personal meaning in each version of these paintings. Van Gogh created seven images of sunflowers in a vase with one piece in a private collection, one destroyed during World War II and the other five residing in museums around the world. This particular image has been referred to as “Vase with Twelve Sunflowers” and is the third version painted in 1889 in Paris while living with his brother, Theo. As a puzzle, the image provides plenty of challenges with the blue wall in the background and the yellow tablecloth with it. While this seems to be a study in sunflowers, it actually is a study in color with very subtle color changes among the yellows of the flowers and the top of the vase.
