Iowa derives its name from the Ioway people who arrived in this land some 13,000 years ago. It lies in the heart of the corn belt where the Mississippian Indians domesticated maize some 10,000 years ago. It was acquired from the French in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and became the 29th state to join the union in 1846.
